Meanwhile, Ana and Bill swirl across the Atlantic toward the Caribbean

PENSACOLA BEACH, Fla. - Claudette came ashore along the Florida coast early Monday, becoming the first tropical storm to strike the U.S. mainland this year after having already dumped heavy rain in some areas.

The storm was expected to weaken after hitting the eastern end of Santa Rosa Island at 1:10 a.m. ET, the National Hurricane Center said in a statement.

Claudette earlier had winds of at least 50 mph, but was not expected to cause significant flooding or wind damage. Lurking more ominously was Tropical Storm Bill, which was expected to turn into a hurricane Monday as it moves over warm waters in the open Atlantic.
