Happy Birthday, Frank!

Happy Birthday, Frank!

from X-Files News by ROI_OLLSON@XFILESNEWS.COM (The XFN Team)

10/13 is usually the day the fandom celebrates birthdays. Birth date to Fox Mulder and Chris Carter and the name of the company that brought us nine years of X-Files, October 13th is the day that usually gets all the attention.

Well today isn’t 10/13, but it is November 17th, birthday of the one and only Frank Spotnitz. Writer, producer, occasional director, and answerer of fan emails extraordinaire, Frank pretty much does it all.

So on his birthday, it’s time to make sure he feels appreciated for all he does, whether it’s posting emails, answering questions, or getting Chris out of his hiding place long enough for him to forward a picture he took to a fan.

Over the years, he’s taught us about faith, hope, love, and what Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease is. What more could we ask for? So take some time out to watch one of the 154 X-Files episodes he contributed to, or go ahead and send birthday wishes to questions@biglight.com. Because who doesn’t love spending their birthday reading fan emails?! Okay, maybe he’ll wait a day or two, but the point is that the message still gets there.

So Frank, thanks for still putting up with us almost ten years after the last scene aired. Enjoy the day, know we look forward to what you have up your sleeve next, and here’s to an 11:17 time stamp in XF3. Because where we're from, it's usually 10:13, but sometimes it's 11:17, too.

A Call to Arms

A Call to Arms

from X-Files News by ROI_OLLSON@XFILESNEWS.COM (Roileigh Ollson - Managing Editor)

The X-Files 3 Campaign: Why You Should Participate

If you’re reading this, you probably consider yourself an X-Files fan. The show may have been off the air for almost a decade, but for some reason, you’re still here. Maybe since then you’ve followed the work of some of the fantastic actors who got their start on the show. Or perhaps you’ve found new shows written and produced by those behind the scenes on the series. One thing is for certain though, had The X-Files not left a significant impression on you, you wouldn’t have gotten to experience any of that.

When it was on the air, The X-Files was revolutionary. The production standards are still considered high, even today. The writing, while from the 90s, is still relevant, and probably always will be. And the acting can still make you cry or laugh or some combination of both in the case of "Bad Blood". The show still resonates. All these years later, those issues and emotions, the journey The X-Files took us on—it’s still something we believe in.

But that story isn’t finished yet. Mulder and Scully may have travelled to the end of the world and back, but there’s still one last story that needs to be told. There’s a movie we all need to see and groups of Philes that we have to go see it with. There are more press junkets to be laughed at and videos to be made with new footage. More fanfic to be written and more artwork to be made--artwork that's way past my stick figure capabilities.

So if you really want XF3, you need to do something about it. If you want to make those new memories and experience the journey all over again, you need to let FOX know. And sure you can post a comment on a board or YouTube or maybe send a tweet, but FOX takes action when they see action. And I know you have it in you Philes.

So send in a picture; it’s something tangible that we can give FOX. It takes more effort than an email and shows our desire, but takes only 5 minutes to print and a few cents to send. If everyone who reads XFN did that, we would be way past our goal of 10,013 photos.

Characters like these don't come along often, and this story deserves and ending. We all lead busy lives with family, jobs, and responsibilities, but FOX is giving us the opportunity to tell them that The X-Files still resonates with us. We’ve gotten their attention. We’ve impressed them with our dedication, so don’t let the chance go by.

Gillian Gold Derby Interview

Gillian Gold Derby Interview

from X-Files News by tiffany_devol@xfilesnews.com (Tiffany Devol - Content Director)

Gold Derby has released a 20 minute Skype video interview with Gillian Anderson where they cover everything from Moby Dick to Any Human Heart to Bleakhouse to X-Files (in other words, they cover a lot).

Perhaps one of the more interesting aspects of the interview is Gillian's in depth discussion about why she chooses certain projects over others. When the interviewer asks if she has considered doing more television, Gillian mentions her initial involvement in a TV project we believe is Frank Spotnitz' Nemesis (formerly known asMorton).

"I was, I've been  looking at TV a little bit. I developed something here for a couple of years that I was very involved with that would have been on TV here and in the states that I decided not to do, but TV was very much a part of what my future was going to be to a certain degree and there's been a comedy script, American television script that I've kind of been following for a little while because I really like it, but all things kind of have to come into play at the same time and you know I do take into account school terms." The interviewer nods in understanding, mentioning that Gillian has three children. She goes on to say, "I'm not interested in doing nine months a year but I might consider doing something for three or four months a year."

The interview is filled with insights about her recent projects, as well as a walk down memory lane for her 1997 Golden Globe win.

Gold Derby is a site that follows the major entertainment awards season.

'Hell on Wheels' to Premiere Sunday

'Hell on Wheels' to Premiere Sunday

from X-Files News by tiffany_devol@xfilesnews.com (Tiffany Devol - Content Director)

John Shiban's new series, Hell on Wheels, is set to premiere on AMC this Sunday. Shiban, who serves as one of the executive producers and showrunners for the post-Civil War epic, was recently interviewed by the Morton Report about how his connection to fellow X-Files alum, Vince Gilligan, and his work on Breaking Bad, landed him on the series.

Synopsis from AMC: Hell on Wheels tells the epic story of post-Civil War America, focusing on a Confederate soldier (Mount) who sets out to exact revenge on the Union soldiers who have killed his wife. His journey takes him west to Hell on Wheels, a dangerous, raucous, lawless melting pot of a town that travels with and services the construction of the first transcontinental railroad, an engineering feat unprecedented for its time. The series documents the railroad's engineering and construction as well as institutionalized greed and corruption, the immigrant experience, and the plight of newly emancipated African-Americans during Reconstruction. Hell on Wheels chronicles this potent turning point in our nation's history and how uncivilized the business of civilization can be.

David Duchovny will join Oscar winning actress, Helen Hunt, Maggie Grace, Joan Chen and John Robinson in the new screen adaptation of Anton Checkhov's The Seagull currently named Relative Insanity.

According to The Guardian:

The Seagull centres on the fading actress Irina Nikolayevna Arkadina's relationship with her son Konstantin, a failing playwright in love with a bright, young actress, Nina Mikhailovna Zarechnaya. Though casting hasn't been officially announced, Hunt is likely to take the Irina role and Duchovny that based on Trigorin, the pompous established playwright despised by Konstantin.

'Time to Talk with...' Gillian Anderson

'Time to Talk with...' Gillian Anderson

from X Files Latest News by tiffany_devol@xfilesnews.com (Adam Chamberlain - Guest Writer)

“Time to Talk with…” Gillian Anderson: Rose Theatre, 17th October 2011

Gillian Anderson stepped onto the stage of the Rose Theatre in the London suburb of Kingston last night for what proved to be an intimate, insightful and entertaining evening.  The event comprised an interview conducted by English theatre directorStephen Unwin, followed by a Q&A session with the audience.  I was afforded the privilege of a front row seat, and am more than pleased to be able to share some highlights here for X-Files News.

Unwin proved to be well rehearsed for the interview in part—notably regarding Anderson’s stage career—whilst a little uninformed in other areas, but the conversation was nonetheless fluid and entertaining throughout.  Gillian first discussed her induction into acting, revealing that she had all but given up on any dreams of so doing for four years after being passed over in an audition for a production of Alice in Wonderland at a community theatre in Grand Rapids, Michigan at the age of twelve.  She talked too of lengthy spells of waitressing both before and after her early success in an off-Broadway production of Absent Friends (1990-91) before once being offered three roles in a single day.

Inevitably, though, and with Gillian quipping, “Oh, so that’s what this is all about,” talk turned to The X-Files.  She spoke of the long road to winning the role of Dana Scully, recalling that she remembers where she was and what pajamas she was wearing when she first read the script for the pilot, plus borrowing a suit on one of many call backs during the audition process on the advice of Chris Carter!  She talked too about retaining her focus on the role throughout the series’ nine-year run by focusing on the work that was right in front of her at any given time, and cited “Bad Blood” as her favorite episode.  This had been in response to a question from a member of the audience, but as an aside she revealed that she had been giving press interviews for the UK release ofJohnny English Reborn all day and had been surprised to be asked about doing comedy for the first time givenThe X-Files’ frequent forays into such material, exclaiming quite rightly that “we were extraordinarily funny!”

The interview also included significant talk of the potential future for the franchise, with Gillian re-asserting her strong wish to reprise the role of Scully for a third movie and going on to stress a sense of urgency to that desire.  Specifically she suggested that it was “clear what [the movie] needs to be, but making it happen is difficult” and that whilst a December 2012 release date was the obvious one suggested by the series’ mythology, in order to meet such a date filming would ideally start as soon as January.  In terms of the potential project’s current status, she said that she had “been told there is something in the works,” but added that she did not know “how true that is or what it means” and that she was not sure whether or not a script had been written.

The Walking Dead has done it again. The highly anticipated season 2 premiere not only broke previous cable ratings records, it outright obliterated them. What's more, the total viewership for season 2 is up 38% and its now become the most watched drama in the history of basic cable television. These impressive numbers come even after AMC slashed the show's budget, a move that culminated with the exit of creator and executive producer, Frank Darabont after last season.

4.8 million viewers in Adults 18-49
4.2 million viewers in Adults 25-54
7.3 million total viewers for premiere
11 million total viewers for the night

X-Files alum Laurie Holden will soon be joined on the show by another face recognizable to X-Files fans, Pruitt Taylor Vince (Gerry Schnauz, "Unruhe").

October 13th was perhaps one of the most inspiring and fulfilling days for XFilesNews staff since XFN opened its doors in October of 2007. As we approach our 4th birthday, we are completely blown away at what this fandom can do.

Just last month, fans came together to celebrate 18 years of The X-Files and tweeted to 20thCenturyFox to show their support for a thirdX-Files feature film. On that day, September 10th 2011, 16,636 tweets were sent, actors Annabeth Gish and BD Wong threw in their support, and philes had such a great time they asked to do it again.

At midnight on October 13th in New Zealand, the second #XF3 Tweet Campaign began as fans once again joined together to tweet 20thCenturyFox to ask for a third X-Files film, this time in honor of Chris Carter's birthday and Ten Thirteen Productions. Annabeth Gish, Dan Sackheim, Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness joined the fun, as did Jimmy Kimmel, much to the delight of philes worldwide. Word spread and soon various sci fi blogs and other fandoms began throwing in their support as well. It was the first time Philes were joined by fans of Castle, CSI, Bones, Fringe, Supernatural, Legend of the Seeker and Haven, all at once. OneHaven fan tweeted their support for #XF3 because several philes tweeted in support of a third season for Haven.

As each country hit October 13th, the tweeting picked up speed and by early afternoon in Los Angeles, #XF3 had gone from not being ranked, to ranking in at number 15 in Twitter's top 500 hashtags. By evening, tweets were coming in from 5 continents, simultaneously.

Hawaii brought the campaign home at midnight October 14th and when the dust settled, philes had sent32,049 tweets, nearly double the number of tweets sent during the September 10th campaign.

The last recorded tweet before the cutoff says it all: Because it's 6am! Go #XF3 - SpookyKatie

XFilesNews has been extremely proud to be part of such a diverse, intelligent, and determined fandom. We've made lifelong friends with many of you, and we've shared laughs and a few tears with the rest of you. If there is one thing we've learned in 4 years of doing this, it's that no one gets there alone. We would not be what we are, and these campaigns could not do what they do, without each and every one of you. When X-Files 3 gets a greenlight, it will be because this fandom comes together, and accomplishes extraordinary things. If you have any doubts as to whether or not Chris Carter or Frank Spotnitz believe in a third film, just remember their words: Don't Give Up. If you have any doubts about Fox, perhaps you should read this.

Thank you for this incredible journey you've taken with us, and don't give up.

#XF3 Campaign Having an Impact?

#XF3 Campaign Having an Impact?

from X-Files News by tiffany_devol@xfilesnews.com (Tiffany Devol - Content Director)

XFilesNews has been campaigning for a third X-Filesfeature film since early 2009 and after last night's start to the #XF3 Twitter campaign for 10:13, it just may be having an impact.

Journalist Patrick Munn has an article up this morning which sources a contact at Fox on the possibility of a third X-Filesmovie, whether or not a script is in the works, and if Fox is aware of the fan campaign to get a third movie made.

We've been aware of them for some time. The persistence, drive and passion is remarkable. They have been surprisingly consistent and well organized. - Munn's source at Fox

Probably more interesting is several comments the Fox source makes about the script. That's right, not a script or a possible script, the script.

Celebrating Ten Thirteen

Celebrating Ten Thirteen

from X-Files News by tiffany_devol@xfilesnews.com (The XFN Team)

"Where we're from it's always 10:13!"

It's a phrase philes have heard since XFN's Place video in 2008 and it's every bit as true today as it was then. If there is one day a year that philes celebrate like Christmas or a birthday, it's October 13th. Cakes are baked, X-Files viewing parties are scheduled, and this year, fans have gone the extra mile by taking to twitter to celebrate the man behind it all, X-Filescreator and executive producer, Chris Carter.

10:13 is special for many reasons. It's Carter's birthday, it's Mulder's birthday, and it's the name of Chris Carter's production company, Ten Thirteen productions.

Perhaps even more special, is the meaning that philes give to 10:13: "When one's heart belongs to the same place and time- 10:13 is not an hour, or a date, or a code, or a casefile. 10:13 is a life philosophy. It's the moment where we secretly smile. 10:13, is a state of mind." - XFN Place

Today's Twitter campaign is certainly an example of the love fans have for Chris Carter and Ten Thirteen, and in honor of today, we are sharing a few of those tweets below:

Happy Birthday Chris Carter! Maybe @FoxBroadcasting will gift you a greenlight for #XF3! - Feed_The_Birds

Happy Birthday to Chris Carter. Thanks for giving the world the best show ever #XF3 - Xphileosaurus

Happy Birthday, Chris Carter! Thank you for everything! And even for William - XxMyIronLungxX

Chris Carter will RAIN as my KING once more once @20thcenturyfox greenlights #xf3 - Hailmo

9 Years, 2 Movies, Phile Friends, Events, Worldwide Campaigns & Mulder & Scully. Thanks to the man who started it all. Now for #XF3! - Boston3346

#XF3 because the world needs more of Chris Carter. Happy 10:13 Philes! - tdevol

I <3 when I spend 10/13's eve talking with my fellow Syfyers about how much Chris Carter spooked our bones off! HB, Chris! Now get me #XF3 - Alleyphile

Happy Birthday from XFilesNews to the man, the legend, Chris Carter. Thank you for bringing Mulder and Scully into our lives, for teaching us to question, and inspiring us to believe. TV has been irrevocably changed thanks to your influence and we're proud to have followed you. Here's to you and to one more X-File.

#XF3 on Twitter for 10/13

from X-Files News by tiffany_devol@xfilesnews.com (Tiffany Devol - Content Director)

We are now just 2 days away from the #XF3 Twitter Campaign to gather support for a third X-Files feature film and to celebrate the birthday of the man himself, X-Files creator Chris Carter.

Our last Twitter event on 9.10.11 left us with 16,636 tweets, actors Annabeth Gish and BD Wong throwing in their support, and philes begging for one more event!

Here are your official instructions for Thursday!

You may tweet anything with the tag #XF3 in it and feel free to tweet us @XFilesNews but make sure to tweet@20thCenturyFox as well! Do not type #XF3 more than once in the same tweet (Twitter will consider it spam and it won't count toward trending). The campaign will run from the moment the first timezone (New Zealand) hits midnight on October 13th until the last timezone (Hawaii) hits midnight on October 14th.

Join XFilesNews, the XF3 Army Believe in the Future campaign, and philes WORLDWIDE all day long onOctober 13th (in each of your timezones) to celebrate Chris Carter, The X-Files , and to convince Fox that we're here and we're not going anywhere. Also, in between tweeting, don't forget to be getting together your photos for the 10,013 Photos for a Greenlight campaign! We will be delivering those photos to Fox in just a few months!

Gillian Anderson on Playing the Boss and Being Happy with Smaller Parts

Gillian Anderson on Playing the Boss and Being Happy with Smaller Parts

from X-Files News by tiffany_devol@xfilesnews.com (Tiffany Devol - Content Director)

Erica Thompson has published a fantastic interview she did with Gillian Anderson this week which covers everything from Gillian's recent portrayals of bosses, to why she is in no rush to be the leading lady (though she would make an exception for X-Files 3).

"Every time I do something that takes a long time, I am aware of how much it is taking away from my experience with my kids. I do try to keep the amount of weeks that I'm filming down. Sometimes you can block shoot things, so if a film is going on for two months, you can block shoot a character within three to four weeks. That's harder to do if you're a more central character, so it has to be something pretty great to make that decision to be on set for three months." - Gillian Anderson

"Breaking Bad" Season Finale

"Breaking Bad" Season Finale

from X Files Latest News by ROI_OLLSON@XFILESNEWS.COM (Roileigh Ollson - Managing Editor)

It seems that not that long ago everyone was prepping for the season four premiere of Vince Gilligan's Breaking Bad, and now we're just hours away from the season finale. Any Phile who watches this masterpiece knows that this last season has been incredible. We're not sure how he does it, but Vince manages to outdo himself every episode. Obviously The X-Files taught him very well.

Stephen King, an X-Files fan himself, hailed Breaking Bad as "the best [show] of the 21st century". And tonight the cast and crew wrap up some pretty important story lines. Okay, we're not finding out about the alien invasion, but according to Vince, you will find out the mystery behind that ricin.

If you watch Breaking Bad, don't forget to tune in to AMC at 10pm or 9 Central. And if you don't, first off, shame on you. You just made Vince Gilligan cry. Now go to Netflix and watch until you're caught up. And be sure not to disturb anyone who is watching because after watching this show, they definitely know a few new ways to kill someone...

You may learn a few things that you didn't know about the woman behind everyone's favorite female FBI agent, and you could pick up some new life lessons:

My mantra at the moment is: "What you are is what you have been, what you will be is what you do now" – I have no idea where it comes from, but I try and think of it on a regular basis to motivate me.

Featured Video- I Wouldn't Change a Day

from X-Files News by tiffany_devol@xfilesnews.com (Tiffany Devol - Content Director)

This week's featured video is brought to you by the incredible KatrinDepp. I Wouldn't Change a Day is a beautiful video that draws multiple parallels between some of the very best moments of The X-Files over its 9 year and two feature films run. Filled with voiceovers, and with Death Cab for Cutie as a backdrop, I Wouldn't Change a Day illustrates just what Scully meant by that phrase.

We're not sure we would change a day either....even that flukeman thing.

Howard Gordon @ Comic-Con

from X Files Latest News by tiffany_devol@xfilesnews.com (Avi Quijada - Editor-in-Chief)

During our visit to the 2011 San Diego Comic Con, we had the pleasure of sharing a few minutes with X-Files Writer/Producer, Howard Gordon. He was one busy man at the convention.
He was promoting two new shows on his slate: Homeland airing on Showtime & Awake airing on NBC this Fall. As Executive Producer of the show, he participated in a heavily attended screening and Q&A for Awake, in company of the show's creator, Kyle Killen and lead actor Jason Isaacs, best known for his role as Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter franchise.
The show is set up as a complex police drama around the life of Detective Michael Britten, who’s living in two different worlds – one where his wife has died and a second where his son has died after the three of them suffer a car accident.
He also promoted his first thriller novel, Gideon’s War. The book has been one of the best sellers and “must haves” in the reviews on sites like Amazon & Barnes & Noble, and he was good enough to hook the XFN team up with hardcover issues of the book! Expect our own review soon!
With the wrap of 24 and the talks of a 24 movie in the works, the next months seem impossibly busy for Gordon, but even so, he was really excited to be in this position in his career and we might have him soon on our XFN Studio podcast.
Check out Gideon’s War at your local bookstore or in its digital format through the Kindle Store.
Homeland airs on Showtime on Sunday, October 2nd at 10 PM  & Awake airs on NBC this Fall.

Gillian Anderson No Longer Attached to 'Morton'

Gillian Anderson No Longer Attached to 'Morton'

from X Files Latest News by tiffany_devol@xfilesnews.com (Tiffany Devol - Content Director)

According to an interview released just minutes ago on Futon Critic, Gillian Anderson is no longer attached to Frank Spotnitz' new series, Morton.

Gillian was first in consideration for the project 2 years ago when Frank began talking to her about doing a spy series. When asked by Jim Halterman why Gillian was no longer attached to the project, Frank responded that he thought the reason was that it took longer than expected and, "by the time we had our yes she couldn't do it anymore." The interview also confirms that the role Gillian was to take on in Morton was written specifically for her.

Frank admits there will be differences, but that the scripts will be written before filming begins in the fall.

XFN first reported on Gillian's possible involvement back in January.
