Denton County deputies seize 76 starving horses from ranch

The horses ran across the bare, arid ground and up to the fence Friday morning when they saw people standing near their empty food buckets. They were Arabians, starving and emaciated. And they were being rescued by Denton County sheriff's deputies.

The 17 horses in stalls inside the barn looked even worse. Their feed buckets had long been empty, and no fresh water was in sight. With their ribs sticking out, they flinched at the bites of numerous flies, flicking their tangled manes and tails. They stood in 4 to 6 inches of their own waste, trying to avoid pools of their own urine.

Even so, they walked up to the barred windows when someone approached and put their muzzles up to the bars to be petted.

These were the horses of Renezans Arabians, a ranch southwest of Pilot Point.
